Watch on YouTube Sonic Colours is a game well worth remastering, but how does the game play out across the spectrum of available consoles? And what of the quality of the remastering work? Godot is completely free and open-source under the very permissive MIT license. ![]() When you fire up the remaster for the first time, you're presented with a logo trumpeting the use of the Blind Squirrel Engine but what does this mean? Well, according to 'Skyth', who did some digging into the game files, it still uses the original C++ code and the Hedgehog Engine but the graphics backend is handled by the Godot Engine. There's plenty of room for the remaster to improve the experience though: the frame-rate was limited to 30fps and being a Wii game, image quality was limited to 480p - the camera often zooms way out to show off the scenery and on Wii, this makes it difficult to even track Sonic's location sometimes due to the low resolution. It's this rhythm that defines boost Sonic games - it's different from classic Sonic but you get that same buzz from maintaining a clean run.This is also complemented by a fantastic soundtrack with a wide range of composers contributing to its production. As you nail boost pads, springboards and bounce off enemies in quick succession, it feels highly satisfying. It may seem slightly overwhelming at first blush but once you become accustomed to the controls and level design, it starts to flow beautifully. Sonic has a lock-on, a boost button and a slide, among other things. Released in November 2010, Sonic Colours builds spectacularly upon the foundation formed by Sonic Unleashed - stages seamlessly transition between full 3D sections and 2D side-scrolling sections as you play. After all, the game is playable on three different PlayStations and a total of four Xbox systems, so how well does the game fare overall? is the remastering work of a decent quality? These are all questions worth answering because fundamentally, the original Sonic Colours was an excellent Wii title and it's a game well worth improving and modernising for the today's systems. Sonic Colors: Ultimate is available on PS5 and PS4 on September 7, 2021.The headlines have concentrated on the issues surrounding the Switch version of Sonic Colours Ultimate - and let's be clear, there are problems there - but we wanted to take a look at the remaster from a more global perspective. The soundtrack combined with the sparkling visuals definitely help out on that front too (although cutscenes haven’t been remastered, so they feel out of place), but the nagging feeling of what could have been remains. Granted, Colors gets closer than a Sonic Unleashed or Sonic Forces. There needs to be a commitment to one style in order to make it a more coherent whole. That’s why these Sonic games skirt the line between enjoyment and frustration. It always feels like having the 2.5D part is a compromise designed to pack out these kinds of Sonic games without subjecting players to too much in the way of slow-paced 3D action. These moments are accentuated by the fact that they only occur in some levels, pushing difficulty up from the straight speed-focused levels that are largely a breeze and over in a minute or so. While there’s no lives or time limit to worry about, having to replay lengthy sections over and over because of poor design decisions really dulls the more vibrant aspects of Sonic Colors. I Thought This Was A 3D Sonic Game, Not 2.5D One lets Sonic pinball up walls at breakneck speed, another turns him into a rampaging monster that smashes obstacles and enemies alike, and then there’s one that sees Sonic drill through the scenery to get a cheeky shortcut through portions of levels. It certainly works for Sonic, who gets chummy with a Wisp early on and is able to connect with their unique abilities to open up closed off areas and overcome obstacles. If only Eggman had tried talking to the Wisps, he could have used their powers without all the trickery. Sonic investigates it and to nobody’s surprise, finds that Eggman is using little aliens known as Wisps to power up his latest MacGuffin, so in true Sonic tradition, the spiny speedster sets out to foil his nemesis and free some poor cute creatures by Running. The plot sees Sonic and Tails lured to a theme park in space, created by none other than Dr. It introduces some ideas that have actually stuck in later entries, it has a bloody good soundtrack, and visually-speaking, it’s one of the prettiest Sonic games around. First released 11 years ago on the Nintendo Wii, Sonic Colors is regarded as a modern peak of the 3D Sonic game. ![]()
